Jiaotong University was founded in Shanghai in 1896. Its main body moved to Xi’an in 1956 according to a decision issued by the State Council, and it was formally named Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) in 1959. XJTU is one of the top nine universities in China, and it is directly administered by the Chinese Education Ministry. XJTU has 54 bachelor’s degree programs, 135 master’s degree programs, 83 doctoral programs, and it includes 17 schools and the School of Chinese Language Study.
There are over 26,000 students, among whom about 5,500 are graduate candidates. Over 500 international students study here from all over the world. The number of faculty totals up to 3,200 with 1,600 professors and associate professors. The area of the campus is 181 acres.
As one of the first few universities, Xi'an Jaiotong University has allowed accepting Chinese Government Scholarship for international students since 1950. Presently, XJTU has trained over 3,000 international students from 30 countries and regions. The majors, which most international students study, are Chinese language, Medicine (with some instruction given in English), Management, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Power Energy, Public Policy and Management, Life Science, Economics and Finance, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In addition, XJTU offers scholarship for the excellent international students.
